The Walcha Pioneer Cottage is operated by volunteers from the Walcha & District Historical Society.
Currently the complex is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am to 4:00pm. For visits outside these times, please contact Mary Brearley on 0407 533264, Kerry Dickson 0488 779133 or Jan Cross 0428 772037.
The Walcha Pioneer Cottage and Museum Complex comprises a variety of historical buildings on the original land grant in 1858 to Constable Buckland including his house built in 1860s of slabs with a shingle roof. The detached former kitchen building now holds a collection of early farming tools.
Another 1860s slab cottage brought to the site in 1970 is used as a general museum displaying a wide variety of local historal items.
There is also a string bark tree trunk (dendroglyph) carved by local aboriginies and brought to the site from the Brackendale area of the Walcha District over 50 years ago.
The Wool industry hall, originally a School of Arts erected at Glen Morrison in 1887, illustrates the principal industry of Walcha, with a large collection of shearing equipment and photographs.
Two Machinery Sheds and house horse drawn vehicles and early agricultural machinery.
The reconstructed Blacksmiths Shop displays a forge, bellows and many original artifacts of the age-old occupation, with Walcha once being the home to four blacksmiths shops.
The Plane Hanger houses the Tiger Moth Aeroplane used in February 1950 to spread superphosphate for the first time in Australia, on the local property “Mirani”, then owned by AS Nivision.
