Walsh Street & Middle Street Rehabilitation Project
Impact on Street Trees in Walsh Street
Council will be undertaking works on Walsh Street & Middle Street to upgrade the pavement, kerb and gutter as well as replacing the watermain running along Walsh Street.
A qualified Arborist inspected the 11 Claret Ash trees on the northern side of Walsh Street (McHattan Park side) on two separate occasions and advised that the repair works on Walsh Street will likely have a significant impact on the trees’ structural integrity and longevity due to the deep excavations required to replace the watermain and reconstruct the kerb and gutter.
These trees also encroach on the overhead powerlines causing an ongoing hazard to nearby infrastructure.
It is therefore necessary to remove these trees to ensure that repairs on Walsh Street can take place without the risk of leaving multiple structurally compromised trees in a public space – particularly near McHattan Park.
Trees that are removed will be replaced with alternative trees/gardens that will be more compatible with road infrastructure and utilities. Re-planting options will be determined in consultation with Council’s Parks & Gardens team and the Beautification Advisory Committee.
